🔎 KNOW THE SIGNS OF STRANGLES

Strangles is a highly contagious bacterial infection in ...Read morehorses and can spread rapidly through direct contact, people, equipment, water buckets and shared surfaces.

🐴 Watch for:
• Fever 🌡️
• Nasal discharge
• Swollen and painful lymph nodes around the throat
• Coughing
• Difficulty swallowing
• Depression and reduced appetite
• Abscesses around the head and neck

⚠️ If you suspect Strangles, isolate the horse immediately and contact your veterinarian.

💉 VACCINATION & PREVENTION

For horses that are regularly vaccinated, continue with yearly booster vaccinations.

If your horse's vaccination history is unknown, we recommend restarting the vaccination course:

💉 2-in-1 vaccination
➡️ 2 weeks later: Strangles vaccination
➡️ 2 weeks later: 2-in-1 booster

This means 3 vaccinations over a 6-week period to help establish protection.

🚫 Vaccination does not replace good biosecurity. Avoid sharing buckets, grooming equipment or tack, and isolate new or sick horses where possible.

We’ve cleaned, scaled, polished and removed many, many teeth that were causing pain and discomfort. 🦷

Here is a great example of heavy plaque and tartar build-up and what a thorough dental hygiene scale and polish can achieve! ✨🦷

Preventative dental care is always going to be more beneficial than waiting until dental disease has progressed to the point where large and invasive oral surgery is required.

She originally joined us as a locum, but enjoyed the clinic so much that she never left! 🐶🐱

Kate loves that no two days as a vet are ever the same and is particularly passionate about complex medical cases and surgery. She enjoys the challenge of problem-solving, working through each case and finding the best approach for every individual patient. 🩺✨

As our Head Veterinarian, Kate also supports both our teams across Dr Paws Wangaratta and Ovens & Kiewa Vets Myrtleford, including helping develop and support our veterinary policies and procedures.
